Can A Debt Collector Call You At Work?

If you’ve fallen behind on credit card or medical bill payments, you’re likely dealing with calls from debt collectors. Some of these collectors can be annoying and downright ruthless. They will call your home, call your cell phone, call neighbors and family members, and even call you at work. However, there are state and federal laws in place that protect you from debt collector abuse and carry consequences should the collector break these laws.

Debt collectors do not have the right to call you whenever they want to. According to the FDCPA, a debt collector can only contact you between 8:00 in the morning and 9:00 at night. In addition, they may not contact you at work if they are told verbally or in writing that you're not allowed to receive calls at the work place.

However, this may not stop some debt collectors from harassing you at work. Their goal is to make you feel ashamed or embarrassed. They're betting on that you'll get so fed up that you'll break down and send them a payment just to make them stop -- don't give in!

If the collector continues to call you at work after you’ve told them verbally or in writing that you are not allowed to receive calls there, they are violating the FDCPA. If that's the case with your situation, we can help to enforce your legal rights.
